Dollar for dollar great pellet rifle
After getting this pellet rifle out of the box with no adjustments to the sights rifle shot a 2" group at 40 yards. Sighted in with minor adjustments and after 9 rounds gun shooting 1/2" groups from bench rests at 50 yards. Installed scope that came with rifle and maintained same grouping free handed. Had cretervproblem same night and rifle fixed the problem with hard hitting RWS pellets. Would buy this rifle again tomorrow with no hesitation. Gun is a bit loud but that is what you get when you have a projectile moving at 1400 fps.

Great power but noisier and heavier than expected.
The specs say 1250 fps with platinum pellets, 1050 with lead. 1050 fps is right on the borderline of supersonic, and since most manufacturers seem to "elaborate" on the velocity a little, I expected subsonic speeds with lead pellets so I could practice in the back yard without the supersonic "crack" alerting the neighbors or making them think I was shooting a powder-burner. No such luck! In our (central Fla.) dense, humid summertime air, it went supersonic with 15.7 grain lead pellets (the heaviest I could find locally)! I like the velocity, but hoped for quieter plinking. I gave 4 stars because the unit arrived with the extremely fragile, extremely exposed front fiber-optic sight broken (or more like missing!). I could find no sign of any pieces of it in the carton or the shipping box, so I think the factory forgot to install it. I have not had a chance to get it sighted in yet (since I'll have to take it to the rifle range to do so!), so I cannot attest to accuracy at distance. I'm not terribly upset about the front sight because I plan to use the scope anyway, which by the way seems to be of decent quality although quite heavy.

    Excellant for the Price
The safety took a little to get use to but no problem. For a air powered pellet gun the knock down/penetration is great. Barrel break does take some effort. Rifle seems most accurate with the dome style pellets. Not a big hunter more plinking, grouping at 30 yards within a dime.

    Excellent!
I decided that I wanted an air rifle for small game hunting in the event of "doomsday" as part of the food acquiring stratagem of my preparedness plan. Being a city dweller and an environmentalist or conservationist of sorts, I prefer not to kill animals. But, if food is not available in sufficient quantities to feed myself, family, and pets, I would like the option of hunting. My criteria for a suitable pellet rifle are that it be quiet so as to not attract potentially life threatening unwanted attention under such conditions, that it feature open sights for backup or primary use, and that it be powerful enough to take down animals as large as raccoons, and birds as large as geese. The Umarex Octane satisfies my three requirements. The sound is surprisingly quite for such a powerful air rifle. The silencer manages to reduce what would otherwise be a .22 rifle volume to the relative whisper of a toy air gun. The open sights are very nice to use and appear lit up by the fiber optic strands that are part of their design. I have not tried to oil anything, but tube videos indicate that the rifle is capable of propelling pellets with around 25 foot pounds of energy - magnum category, which enough for the job. In addition, the scope, which has the Umarex trademark printed on it, seems really well made with a heavy feel that suggests durability. The two focusing mechanisms for the view and the crosshairs, and the one for zooming, work smoothly. The image is clear and bright. The two additional adjustment mechanism for zeroing the crosshairs also work well and don't require a tool, and they have metal screw caps. Overall, the scope seems reasonably comparable to a Nikon 3-9x40 that I have. The scope rings are nice as week and can be thumb tightened. I decided to try out a set of Leupold .22 see-thru ring mounts (57327 - gloss) to allow for co-witnessing. They work, but are a bit tricky to install correctly so that the scope is initially aligned enough to prevent over tightening or loosening of the crosshair springs. I had to use shim on the scope rings to keep the crosshair adjustment wheels near the center of their operation range - they should be approximately flush with the wheel housings for optimum performance. There is a you tube tutorial on scope ring shimming why this is important for consistent zeroing and how it also relates to "barrel droop" as well. I have yet to try out many different pellet types, but so far I have had success with RWS Meisterkugeln Professional Line. These are wadcutters for target and zeroing and fit perfectly into the loading chamber in every case and have proven consistent, being precision made. In contrast, the Crosman Premier hollow points I tried seemed a bit troublesome to seat in. I plan to try out a hunting sampler set by H&N to find the ideal hunting pellets for 25 and 50 yards. To sum it up, so far, the Umarex Octane has given me the impression of quality and capability. I think it feels and looks good too. I really can't fins a flaw at this point other than not having sling mounts (I will try to install a set of Uncle Mike's #2520-0 swivel basses to resolve this deficiency). As for a cheek rest, one can find a multitude varieties, including ones that have useful pouches for holding pellets and tools. also, to protect the scope and open sights, I highly recommend the Northstar Tactical Scope Guard with Muzzle Cover.

Best Value for a Sringer Rifle for the Money!
Awesome rifle, just needs a little tlc when you get it, and you will have the best springer rifle for the money! , just thoroughly clean and season the barrel and replace the breech seal as soon as you get it( a very easy fix). And even better if you can or have someone that can also make sure the main gas tube is deburred and cleaned/polished and relubed you will have a beast of a rifle for the money! also some need a little trigger debur/polish or just a little adjustment, and sometimes you get one with a really good trigger right out of the box, either way you cant beat this rifle for the money! I got lucky and had a great trigger out of the box! A very powerful and accurate springer rifle with a little tlc applied as soon as you get it new out of the box! preety much all air rifles have their flaws and about all need some kind of work and cleaning new out of the box, but ya cant go wrong for the money on this one! A great rifle! and a very decent useable scope with it, where as pretty much all other springers come with a scipe you want to scrap and get a better one, the scope on the Octane is the best Ive seen that comes with a new springer rifle!

    I like it
This gun shoot great just with the iron sights. Can't use the scope and use iron sites. Getting some see thru mounts. You need to run 200 pellets or so for break in. The pellet hitting the target makes more noise that the gun. Lots of power. Research the wed for best pellet.

GREAT PELLET GUN FOR UNDER $200
I initially found this gun on another online pellet gun sales site. Their price for the gun is $40 more and they are cheaper then any other company selling this gun. All of the professional reviews I found on this gun praised the overall power & performance of it. As soon as I received the gun my son and I took it out into the back yard for some target practice. I am very pleased with the power & performance. We shot about 30 pellets through it and it took only a handful of shots to get it scoped in. We are getting 2 inch grouping at 50 yards. I find that to be great for a new gun out of the box. It is said that they get better accuracy the more they are fired. The only quirks I found was the first shot sounded like a .22 riffle firing. The sound levels lowered after a few shots. It now sounds just like any other pellet gun. I think the initial loudness was due to manufacturing oil in the barrel. The other quirk is the cocking effort is a little hard. It is not a problem for me but it is hard for my son to load. I new this from reading other reviews on the gun but figured if you are looking for the power this gun has cocking effort is the price you must pay. Over all my son and I are tickled pink with this new gun.

    hard hitter !
First of all it's a pellet rifle not a BB gun ! A very big, heavy, long, accurate, hard hitting pellet rifle. It's rated at 42lbs. cocking effort ....believe it's all of that ! Not for every one,but if you want an air rifle that delivers knock down power for hunting...this is it !With scope its probably over 10 lbs., kind of heavy to carry while hunting, also just a little over 48" long.....this thing is bigger than most deer rifles ! Not a good first air rifle for beginners !So why do I rate it so good ! I have 5 other air rifles & this thing is tops,it delivers . You'll think your carrying around a sniper rifle...this thing is big & heavy, but I love it. Now ,the rifle is shipped in it's factory box,a very poor way to ship this product, mine arrived with the stock butt hanging out of box...there was a shipping label wrapped around front middle of box ..that seal was broken, box had been opened. I guess when you ship something like that, poorly packaged, somebody's just gotta have a look ! So , like the rifle...hate the shipping method !

    Quiet, Accurate, Powerful
Excellent version of the B28! Very smooth. Trigger not quite T05 good, but it's not broken in, yet. Like the open sights. I won't be scoping it for a while. Feels very solid and well-built. Easy to shoot, not very hold sensitive compared to other magnum springers. Can be an all-day plinker. Highly recommended!

    Good pellet rifle
Pretty good for the buck. It is very heavy. Scope is so far usable. Pretty accurate. One caution - the cocking mechanism pin can fall out if not careful-keep upright when cocking & don't leave barrel in the broke position. I learned the hard way, pin feel out in a leaf pile, but found it & was OK. If weight isn't issue for you it's a good value.
