This spreader will not shut off, the calibration is non existent. the only way to gauge the flow rate is try it on pavement first, even then you will still be guessing. This thing is POORLY designed, it continues to lose fertilizer no matter how hard you try to get it to shut off.

    POOR CHOICE
    I would like someone from the marketing department to pull one of these out of the warehouse and try to put it together. I have a full size work shop with all tools a person might need. It took me over an hour to assemble this. I had to dramatically modify the handles because they WOULD NOT fit together. The other problem is the adjustable opening control. I have tried to readjust several times. It just does not want to open correctly.

    EASY TO USE - WORKS GREAT
    I must admit that I was skeptical when I placed the order for this spreader. Certainly for this low price I wasn't going to get something that was built very well. When the item arrived I could tell right away that it was exactly what I was hoping for, built well. The size is pefect, the larger wheels make it extremely easy to handle and the hopper holds an appropriate amount of material. It was easy to set and manage the discharge rate and control the start and stop of the material flow. I would highly recommend this spreader to anyone looking for a sturdy, functional, light weight drop spreader.

    PRECISION DS4500 RDGY Deluxe Drop Spreader
    Purchased this drop spreader to replace a 30 + y/o rusted out Scott's PF2 drop spreader. Minimal assembly with no tools required. Followed directions on a plastic flow control piece which limits the throw of the flow control throttle and hence the rate of application. Broke on the first of use, when I pulled back on the knob. (Doesn't anyone use metal anymore?) The real problem is that the flow gate has a 3/8" gap which does not seal and stop the flow of fertilizer and allows an uncontrolled release if you decide to push or carry the spreader from your front to back yard. Gave it a star because it is made in the USA, but thoroughly disappointed in the spreader's performance. Promptly returned to Walmart for a refund. Good service from Walmart, poor performance by the spreader.

    Drop Spreader Wastes Material
    It continues to drop fertilizer even after it is turned off. I called customer service in Lincoln IL. "Let me see if he is in." I left a detailed phone message and have not received a call back in over a week. Read the guarantee. It does not cover shipping either way, so in effect, it is worthless. I ordered from Walmart and paid online and got free store pickup.. The box was about 30x30x30 and filled with pellets. The box was impossible to place in my car, so I had to unpack it in the parking lot. The spilled pellets fell right through a shopping cart. Fortunately, they are made of paste and will dissolve in water. Walmart must have caught me on camera and sent a guy out to sweep up the pellets. Nice to know somebody actually monitors the cameras. Nobody said a word. I left a good portion of the pellets in the cardboard box, placed it in a cart and walked the cart back into the store for proper disposal. I purchased this spreader because it was made in the USA for twice the price of a slightly smaller Scott's 3000 spreader made in China. The Scott's spreader I used for 38 years. Both spreaders drop material just fine. But moving the new one down the drive to the backyard leaves a trail of material as if it was set on 1 or 2 when clearly it is set in the off position. I like the Scott's spreader because to release material, I squeeze a spring loaded handle to start and stop. This new one has a control lever that is not spring loaded. The cable slides up and down. I'm thinking with the corrosive nature of fertilizer, the cable will corrode and not work as well with time. This is just a theory on my part. I suggest a good washing and WD-40 all the moving parts for winter storage on any kind of spreader. One year, the wheels on my Scott's froze up from rust with garage storage over the winter. But WD-40 fixed that. The Scott's spreader finally failed because the rotating part with teeth is made of two parts. It began to separate in the middle. None of the teeth ever broke off and it is plastic.

    It is a good spreader, although at first, it didn't seem like any of the weed and feed was coming out. It is not apparent when in the back pushing it, but it does a good job. I prefer this model to the other cheaper ones out there. We will see how the weeds feel about it.

    Worked well
    If you don't want to fling fertilizer/grass seeds everywhere then a drop-spreader is worth consideration. This unit is well made with durable materials. Experiment with the low end of the adjustment as It seems to apply more product than expected. Overall, once you figure out an acceptable setting for your product it is a good piece of equipment to have.
