A lot of fun, and perhaps not as loud as you think
Melissa & Doug have great toys, and our daughter was really looking forward to playing with this instrument set. It did not disappoint! Everything is, of course, wood, even the kazoo. Well, except the cymbals, naturally. It all came in the usual wooden crate with a plastic insert; nice, easy, neat place to keep it. But keep in mind the plastic doesn't hold the instruments in place particularly solidly, so don't expect them to stay put if it goes sideways somehow. The instruments are a lot of fun to play with. And I was actually a little surprised that it wasn't as, shall we say, noisy as I expected. The clapper certainly makes a sound, but it won't hurt your ears; the maracas are not loud; the cymbals are not as clangy-crashy as ones you expect to hear in bands or orchestras; the kazoo is not overly obnoxious; and the tambourine is really quite pleasant. If you have any experience being in a percussion section, you might be kind of disappointed, but any kid will be very happy playing with these.

Well made, but not musical
Like many parents today, I love Melissa & Doug products. They are invariably of solid construction and known to be of high quality. This set of instruments follows that pattern. The 5 different instruments are brightly colored and well-constructed. It looks like they will last for many years, even when played with frequently by children. The wooden handle castanet, 2 maracas and kazoo are all made of wood. The small hand cymbals are made of metal with wooden handles. The tambourine is constructed of metal and other materials. All of them are designed to please and entertain children ages 3 or older. Instructions are included for playing the kazoo, necessary because most children will just try to blow air through it rather than humming. I like that the back of the package lists 4 activities for an adult and child to do together with the instruments. I also like that the set comes with a wooden box to store them in. One improvement I would like to see is for a lid to be included with the box; a slide-on lid would make storage of the set much more convenient and versatile. Looking at the set from a musician's viewpoint, there is also room for improvement. The sounds created from these instruments are quite muted. I don't know if that was intentional (an attempt to save the nerves of parents of young, noisy children), or not, but as musician I would like to see better quality sounds from a child's early set of instruments. The wooden handle castanet is the best piece, making a pleasing snapping sound. The maracas make a soft sound when shaken, much more muted than most baby rattles. The tambourine is also muted - both the drum portion and the little cymbals along the edges. The 2 small, hand cymbals should ring when the edges glance off each other, as many finger-cymbals do, but these, unfortunately, do not. Now, to address the kazoo: a wooden kazoo simply isn't practical for children. Children share. Even if there is only 1 child in a family, any friend coming over would put their mouth on it and it is nearly impossible to sanitize; it is not a hygienic product, and the sound produced is very unsatisfying. Plastic kazoos I have used are much more fun, with better sound, and can be cleaned between uses. In summary - it is a quality product, kids will probably enjoy it for a little while, but it is disappointing musically.

    The Melissa & Doug Music Makers 7-Piece Wooden Musical Instrument Set was sent to me as a Walmart Soark Reviewer! And it is a perfect addition to our homeschool currriculum! Our kids love this musical set. You get a pair of maracas, a tambourine, a kazoo whistle, a pair of brass cymbals, and a wooden handle castanets! Now all the instruments are made of wood except for the tambourine and the cymbals! A big plus is how kids' sensory development and fine motor development are skills shown while playing with these. Comes with a handy and cute storage wooden crate that holds all 7 pieces perfectly. Easy storage or leave out on a tablet or shelf for easy location. No cons to report. Just let the kids play the music!

    Great set!
    This is such a cool music set. It has all the makings for an impromptu band. Everything comes in a short wooden crate. I actually use the crate for myself. It's nicely sturdy and I use it for my nail polish. The music set comes with many noisemakers. It comes with a wooden handle castanet, two cymbals, two maracas, a tambourine, and a wooden kazoo. The kazoo actually came with directions, which I didn't realize that I actually needed. Each of the noisemakers seems to be made nicely. They all seem to hold together well and not break easily. My toddler daughter actually stepped on top of the tambourine and it still held together. I would not recommend doing that though. The tambourine also has a hole along the side of it that makes it easier to hold onto. The wooden handle castanet is held together by what seems to be a hair tie. It doesn't look too sturdy, but it has held together well. My daughter plays rough and the tie hasn't loosened at all. All in all, this is a great music set for early learners. Each item holds together well and will more than likely last for a long time.

    So happy with this set for my daughter
    My toddler (3) absolutely loves these instruments. Great set! I've had this for about 2 weeks so far and each instrument is still in great condition and still makes pretty (loud lol) musical sounds. My toddler plays with it almost everyday. These are the perfect size for little hands! It's easy for my little one to hold and also play on her own. My only complaint is the wooden crate it comes in has little pieces of wood that stick out and have pierced my skin a couple of times so be careful. Other than that, the actual instruments are made of great sturdy quality, (they don't feel cheap) and they are great fun and easy to use and play. This set gives so many different sounds to produce and will stimulate their minds and ears to develop a love of music and rhythm. My daughter loves this set of musical instruments! It helps keeps her busy, happy and creative! This set is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. It's nice that she gets to try various instruments. As of now the quality of the instruments is amazing. I love that my baby brings the musical instruments with her wherever she wants to.

    Great set for musical play
    I am a fan of Melissa and Doug toys and this 7 piece instrument set is no exception. It is nicely packaged in a sturdy wooden box and it would make a good gift item for ages 3+. The set contains 5 instruments: tambourine, wooden kazoo, 2 wooden maracas, a wooden handle castanet, and 2 cymbals. All the pieces are nice visually and all are well made, but functionally the kids seem to have a little difficulty with the kazoo. Outside of that, this set has been a very popular toy with my kids. I love seeing them be creative and making their own music.

    Kids instruments
    First off I like most thing Melissa and Doug, and this instrument package is awesome as well as most there things- they are made with quality so they will last forever, thru many kids- I have 8 grandbabies that are small ages (1 thru 8)and all of them had fun playing with this set, we had alot of fun and it's great for using as a music class during this covid- I liked the fact that they are real instruments made with safe and yet sturdy materials! I also liked the box it came in-it is wooden as well, just wish it had some kind of lid, but other than that- I highly recommend for all families with kids 1-10!! Highly recommend!! You wont be disappointed!!

    Tons of fun
    As long as you don't mind the noise this will offer lots of entertainment for your little ones. Comes in a cute little wooden crate and has multiple instruments to choose from. My grand daughter loves hers but left it at her other granny's in Colorado, so we got her another one. She spends hours playing with her different instruments. Once the day is over, she puts them all back in her little crate.

    Be prepared for the noise!!
    This is an exciting toy for kids of all ages. They can have their own band full of different sounds. It's very sturdy as well as the case you keep it in. So you don't have to be concerned with it breaking. I know all kids would just love thos. Besides, what child doesn't like making noise!

    Strike up the band!
    This is a sweet, well built, colorful group of mostly wooden instruments. The cymbals are the only instrument that isn't made of wood. The sounds that they make are realistic and fun, with the exception of the kazoo and the cymbals. The cymbals are rather small so the true sound is muffled. Also, I expected the kazoo to sound a lot more like a kazoo but I didn't hear it. My guess is the castanet, maracas, and tambourine will be the center of the attention when playing with these. I really liked the discovery suggestions on the rear of the package (pictured) because they are imaginative plus I think they'll promote learning at the same time. I would recommend these instruments to friends and family with children aged 3 and up.
