Lionel Still Makes Great Trains
This is a first train for a 7-year old and he was very excited to get it. He has spent hours playing with it.

Too delicate for under the tree
This is a nice quality set that my family got for the Christmas tree, as it is pictured on both Walmart and Lionel's site. We bought this over the cheaper battery powered train with plastic track, as we wanted something that would last for years. As advertised, it is a delicate set, not intended for kids; but it's almost too delicate for the purpose we got it for. The set has what I think is a pretty bad design flaw in how the speaker wire interfaces with the locomotive - if the front wheels of the tender car turn too much, the wires to the speaker will break off. Additionally, Lionel is not responsive for repairs and ultimately I had to mail the whole thing back to Walmart for a replacement. A family may want to consider that they could get 3 of the cheaper sets for one of these...I might have gone with that option in retrospect. Firstly, the locomotive arrived with the whistle snapped off. I e-mailed Lionel and they did not respond. I didn't pursue this further, as this small detail did not seem that big a deal. A few weeks later the train stopped making noise. This happened when the front wheels of the tender car (which contains the speaker) turned too far when it was being put away, pulling the poorly soldered wires to the speaker off. Solder being the only thing that holds these wires in place seems a poor choice - even a microUSB would work much better here and allow it to unplug in the event of stress. At a minimum, there should be a post or mechanical barrier to prevent the front wheels of the tender car from turning more than 45 degrees. I hoped to avoid the hassle of mailing it back, and even tried taking it to UBreakIFix tried to repair the solder to the board, but it was beyond their capability. I called Lionel on a Monday at 2pm central time, twice, waited on hold over 20 min, and then went to voicemail. I left a message and was never called back.

Good price for a Lionel Polar Express. Fun train.
Walmart has one of the best prices on this train set. One thing to keep in mind it is only controllable from the supplied remote control or a smart phone with a downloaded app. It will not run by using an AC transformer handle like older Lionel trains. Make sure to buy three aaa batteries to put in the remote to get it to function otherwise the train won't run on Christmas morning. The train itself runs off a supplied ac transformer but needs the supplied remote with batteries in it to run. Great sounds and lots of smoke from the locomotive.

    Pleased!
Great train set, seems to be very well built and should stand up to the test of time. The box was surprisingly heavy. Our 9 and 5 year old boys are thrilled. Could use some more tracks to go with.

It is a beautiful train but it is VERY loud. The only way for it to not make noise is to unplug the whole train. Either way it is the best train on the market because of how durable and beautifully made it is. Guaranteed to get lots of compliments! Brought more fast tracks to make a bigger track

    Polar express train
I took my grandson on the polar express since he loves trains. This was perfect for him and it is the best train out there. Would definitely recommend this for any train lovers

    Outstanding
This is lovely, works beautifully, and our son loved it! (He's 7) Little people are cute and can even sit on the train's front or roof. They need to make the foot holes a little bigger though. Only trouble we had is the railing of the observation car coming off. Once I verify it doesn't need to be removed for any maintenance, we'll super glue it. Would buy again and I look forward to expanding it each Christmas.
