had one for 2 years, still works great
For those of you who have rated this unit badly, I suppose you just got a faulty one. I have had 2 of these for going on 2 years now without a single beep, false alarm, or issue whatsoever. I replace the battery about every 6 months, and they keep on ticking. I test them every now and then to make sure the alarm sounds. They speak "Fire" or "Carbon Monoxide" audibly in addition to a beep, so it's pretty easy to figure out which alarm is going off. A pretty good value if you are worried about Co2. Everyone should have at least 1 Co2 detector at home! Especially if you have young children.

Ten years old when I received it
The typical recommendation is that smoke/carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced after 10 years, so I ordered this item in early 2017 as a replacement for one I had with a manufacture date of 2005. As a matter of fact, the original unit kept beeping to indicate that it was expired. When the new one arrived, I noticed the manufacture date was already nearly 10 years ago and the Duracell batteries that were included had also expired in 2013. I was very disappointed and am still waiting to talk to a Kidde representative to see if it's safe to use the unit. (They called in response to an email I sent, but it was while I was at work. I returned their call leaving my work number but it's been a couple of weeks and they've yet to call me back). The original unit saved my family of 4 in 2006 when we had an issue with a generator, so I would highly recommend the unit if you can purchase a recently manufactured one. I don't know if the problem is with Walmart.com's distributors holding their inventory too long or with Kidde putting old inventory out to its distributors.

    Good CO Protection for home
    Replaced an older with a newer one, but these really do work and are pretty sensitive. Ours went off after running my lawn tractor in the garage, door was open but it still picked up the carbon monoxide in the house so it's pretty sensitive and works pretty well. It also has a verbal warning that identifies whether it's smoke from a fire or carbon monoxide or a low battery, so it's pretty sophisticated.

    Very happy seems to work as designed
    Bought to replace exact same unit. Old unit reached 7 year life span. Was able to mount to ceiling using existing mounting bracket. No hole drilling in ceiling hard to find the exact same detector. Walmart online had it. I used this kiddie in my unfinished basement and first alert brand on main level and upstairs. Neither are made in USA kiddie made in china first alert made in Mexico. The first alert seems a bit louder during testing. But reading reviews there's more defects in first alert brand. I just wanted to use the same existing mounting brackets, and through Walmart I was able to find exact same model numbers as my old units

    Kidde Smoke and C02 Detector
    I ordered 3 of the Kidde detectors to replace two hard wired Kidde units (which were out of date) and a third one for the living room. The units were easy to install, the same size as my old Kidde's. No worry from power failures as my two old units did not have battery backup The units have a loud, piercing tone when activated with a canned woman's voice alerting of either smoke or carbon monoxide. We sleep with the bedroom door closed and the tone/voices can easily be heard thru closed doors. As per Kidde's recommendation, we did NOT install one in the kitchen. I feel comfortable in knowing the detectors are on guard 24 hours a day and are adequate in our 1457 sq. ft. home. A great buy especially since Walmarts had them on sale.

    Love the talking features!
    The thing that sets this alarm apart is the talking features in addition to the audible alarm. People tend to panic when an alarm goes off, but having a voice saying, "Fire! Fire!" or "Warning! Carbon monoxide detected!" would help focus your attention even if you were woken out of a deep sleep. The only drawback to this alarm is that it does not have a 10 year sealed battery and still requires the batteries to be checked once a month and changed twice a year. It does however have an audible "Low Battery" beep and voice notification.

    Best Combo Alarm- Best Value At Walmart
    I paid at least $15 more for the same unit previously at one of the famous large hardware stores. Most price club stores I searched had either smoke or carbon alarm but not both combined. Walmart had this exactly unit I needed to replace at much less cost. I had the battery inserted and the plate it snaps onto installed in about 15 min. up and running. Trust me when I say this is the best price for a combo unit I could find either on line or in stores. Now I feel my family is protected again.

    Great Product which provides protection for home.
    We already have one in our upstairs and put this one downstairs. The life of this product is about 7 years and has to be replaced as a safety. We had a tragic fire close by in which 5 died with only one detector in house with no battery. This uses double A batteries and is very simple to install and just twist off top to install new batteries. I think this should be a must and hopefully fire departments of other organizations will volunteer to install or check houses or apartments yearly.

    Great product.
    This is a great product and really very necessary for your home. I know my husband & I are sleeping a lot better because we installed this product. I heard about it from my sister who has one. The unit talks and told them when they had carbon monoxide! It was their and could be your life saver.

    Actually got this detector to replace an older one that stopped working properly. This combination smoke/CO detector saved the lives of everyone in my house a couple of winters ago. When the "talking" detector went off ("Warning Carbon Dioxide") I immediately got everyone out of the house and called the Fire Department. Fire Department told me that if this alarm had not gone off, everyone in my house would have died of CO poisoning that day due to a malfunction in my heating system. No home should be without at least one of these - I have four.
