Software over tax "professionals"
I would recommend HR Block software. But don't let them do your taxes for you unless you pay extra for them to promise to di them right. Otherwise they make stupid mistakes that the software would never let you make!

Lack of MN State charity deduction update!!
HR Block did not update Minnesota state program for extended charity contributions over Federal $300 on state Form M1NC line 32. Many people donated to charities during Covid-19 last year and should be able to follow MN. state tax help for an extended charities deduction!!!

    You get what you pay for.
    Less than happy with the product. Top version of software does has quite a few areas that are not well supported or integrated. On line support or chat was less than inspiring. Overall cheaper than turbo tax and tax act, but you get what you pay for.

    Inaccurate and can't be submitted
    The IRS filing was rejected with no reason provided. The state tax burden calculation is far too high. Need to manually review every document and mail in a return. What was the point?

    My longtime tax preparation favorite.
    Consistently easy to use and accurate. I only use the versions that are installed on my computer. Very versatile. The price is actually less than years ago.

    Easy to use
    I've been using H&R Block software for 5 years and it never disappoints. The program walks you through step by step and if you have questions about a section, there is an info button to explain. I would highly recommend use od this software.

    Good overall
    Overall, the software is easy to use and does some of the heavy lifting for me, which I appreciate. It didn't produce an accurate QBI number, so I had to do it manually, and the IRS disagreed with how I calculated it (no penalties, thankfully). The chat support was also helpful when the IRS rejected my e-file, even though the AGI number they wanted from the previous year (to confirm my identity) was correct. The chat can be improved, though. It wasn't clear whether someone was coming for several minutes, so I almost closed the window, thinking it wasn't working.

    Software good, but IRS does not want me to e-file.
    It was relatively straight forward to use. My only issue is that the IRS would not accept the e-file, because the AGI from the previous year did not match. I called the hotline and the IRS verified that I had correct figure, but my return was still being rejected. This is the second year in a row that I have not been able to e- file and submitted a paper return.

    Great tool
    Takes you step by step and helps you know how much you owe as you add w2s and other income, and then how much your deductions help you. If you don't know, you just go through anyway and the questions will help it figure out if you need to turn in anything for that topic. Still could use help understanding the whole investment part, though…
