I miss my TomTom
I was talked into buying a Garmin after my old faithful TomTom wouldn't charge due to a bad connection as happens with cell phones sometimes after much use. I was told Garmin was a better product. However, I found it to be less user-friendly and its features were not as helpful as TomTom. Also, it only comes with the lower 49 states -- I guess they count Hawaii as a lower state. TomTom comes with all 50 states, plus Canada. I had to shell out $79 or so just so I could get Alaska. After numerous wasted hours of trying to download the $79 map, the Garmin froze for over an hour. And, while it seemed to have installed the map, it didn't work. When I tried to update it using Garmin Express, it didn't recognize the new map. I'm still waiting to see if they will refund my money. If so, I'll use it to buy another TomTom from Walmart for only about $20 more than the useless map I purchased from Garmin.

    PLANNED A TRIP TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK NEAR BAR HARBOR, MAINE. DOWNLOADED MAPS FOR THE NORTHEASTERN STATES UPON ARRIVAL OF THE GPS UNIT. LOADED MOTELS STOPS IN GPS FOR OHIO,PENNSYLVANIA,NEW YORK,NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MAINE AND ALL STOPS WORKED PERFECTLY. TOURED GETTYSBURG, CONTINUED TO BANGOR, MAINE WITH FOUR MOTEL STOPS ENROUTE. GOOD DIRECTIONS FROM BANGOR TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. THREE MOTEL STOPS ON RETURN TRIP PLUS A SIDE TRIP TO NIAGARA FALLS AND AGAIN NO PROBLEMS FINDING OUR WAY. ACTUALLY, THE TRIP WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ENJOYABLE IF I COULD FIND A WAY TO ELIMINATE ALL THE TRAFFIC ENCOUNTERED EVERY DAY.

    Great product and value.
    I had a smaller one from years ago and did not have the lifetime updates which this one does. The screen is much larger, gives more options, shows the speed limit posted and the speed you are going on screen, easy find places. Great value for $129, free shipping too!

    In 3D mode it shows street name 3 streets in advance. Perfect for night driving and when their is no street sign. Tells you in advance when to turn and when you drive up to street it tells you to turn. All information is on gps it tells you how far next turn is your speed... the posted speed limit and most important school zones. Garmin unit gives a warning when your close to a school zone this feature can not be turned off, I live in a big city with small cities inside city limits my city uses yellow blinking lights to warn driver about school zone the smaller cities use a sign very confusing unless you have a garmin it warns you in any city about school zones.

    Our Garmin nuvi 55LM 5" GPS Navigator with Free Lifetime Map Updates is awesome! It's easy to understand & the screen is big enough to see. Ordering was very easy! The only thing I wish Walmart.com would do is tell you in the description that the GPS comes with a power cord. I ordered an additional one along with the GPS & didn't need to.

    i have not tried on trip yet but locally i like it showing the next street as you come to it. the signs are at times hard to see or read so it is big help if looking for the street you want to turn on. it warns when you enter a school zone which will be nice in a area i'm not familiar with. two local roads the road sign says a speed but garmin says another. not a reliable source of the speed limit. i have not tried creating my own route with basecamp and loading into this but i am assured it will work. i don't like interstates if not needed and the nuvi 265 insisted i take them. i hand drew my own route and after a few recalculating it would match my map for awhile. it would not let me create in basecamp where as this will so i bought this. the price was worth the try it

    Garmin - one of the best
    Garmin is one of the top leading GPS Navigation Systems out. I like the way they have advanced the screen on the Garmin device to make it more consumer friendly. The other positive is that the Free lifetime map updates makes this Garmin worth the money. I have never had major problems with my device. Sometimes it may lose signal due to satellite range while traveling but it definitely gets me to my destination. It can give you the directions to restaurants, gas stations, and shopping places. No more printing up directions or being lost when you have a garmin device.

    So far I like this unit, I had to update the maps which took forever but that seems to be the norm. The only problem I have had is that I haven't found anywhere to find my saved addresses that I have entered. I had to reenter the address every time I changed options on the gps. My old Garmin nuvi had a saved address site, maybe this one doesn't have one, at least I can't find it. Other than that it worked fine the only time I used it.

    I purchased one to back up my old unit. It has a lot of very nice features my old one didn't. It picks up satellites extremely fast (even in my garage) When I differ from the route it sends me, the next time I go on the same trip it remembers the way I went before and sends me that way. No more "RECALCULATING" , it just does without annoying me. I am very happy with it.
