Family Safety Is My Prime Concern
This is a fine product to protect your family from colorless and odorless carbon monoxide gas. Carbon monoxide gas is more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream than oxygen. Left undetected, unspeakable health consequences can ensue. This alarm also detects the presence of explosive gases, natural and lp. Now we know that we can smell them when awake, but what about when we are sleeping? I for one don't want to take a chance and risk an explosion while we are sleeping. I want to wake to the warning alarm and take action! This alarm has a nice form factor, smaller than the Kidde Night Hawk which I have previously owned. The display remains dark unless alarm or testing conditions exist, whereas the Night Hawk continuously maintains a display even when operating on battery back up. The LED display just eats up battery power when no alarm condition exists. On more than one occasion the low battery alarm has sounded after an extended power failure. I find this a bother given the battery power appears to be diminished sooner than it should. This alarm also features an end of life notification on the display which makes it easy to know when the unit needs to be replaced. The Night Hawk also has this feature, but it displays Error whereas this unit displays End. End is much more meaningful to me. The last nice feature is the battery guage built into the display. It is easy to guage if the battery needs replacing.

    Very good product.
    This replaces the exact same one I had that was at "end of life." The old one lasted over 15 years. It does have a battery backup. The old one was sent to us from FEMA after a major ice storm which took our electricity out for a week. It is easy to set up, easy to read and understand.

    OK for Basic protection
    Sensors are functional which is the heart of the device, but the housing is made of cheep plastic and mgf outside the USA, which is NOT a plus for me. The door that exopses the batteries is a real piece of bad work. I expected more from First Alert. 1 to 10 rating with 10 being the best it gets a 5.

    I live in an RV and have had trouble with previous detectors. They have all cost a fortune and have been hard-wired into my RV. When they malfunction, there is only a couple of ways to turn them off...cut the wire, or beat them to death with a hammer. This detector plugs in to an electrical outlet, has a battery backup and you can't beat the price! I'm not sure about the durability rating, as I have only had the detector for a couple of weeks.

    So Far....So Good
    I bought this product a couple of weeks ago. We had installed a propane gas log set in the fireplace and I wanted it to detect a possible gas leak if that's ever the case. We do not leave the logs burning while sleeping, so the carbon monoxide detector is just a bonus. It was easy to plug in and mount on the faceplate of the plug. The little screen is easy to read. It has not gone off unless I was testing it....so it's hard to tell if it works. However.....it has not gone off for a false alarm and has not been annoying. Hopefully if we need it to save our lives....it will.
