Good smoker for the money!
I bought this smoker as an early Christmas gift for my son. He LOVES it! He cooked some pork for BBQ, a brisket and some chicken the first time he used it. This unit has some serious room in it. Everyone raved about how good everything was. He was proud to show off his new smoker. I believe he would recommend this for the novice or experienced griller.

Terrible Smoker
I bought this smoker to smoke briskets & turkeys. This smoker is unusable as a smoker due to the inability to control the airfow. There is NO way to keep the firebox vented properly (throttled down) to eliminate the flames & cause too high a temp in the main smoking area. The reasons for this are no tight seals throughout the whole device & a cheap, poorly designed firebox door with a flimsy flew. Without the ability to regulate the airflow, this is nothing but a cool looking charcoal grill... Certainly NOT a SMOKER. The paint is also cheap and flaked off the firebox on the 1st use. It is now rusting. I'm not gonna do anything to it based on, why throw good money after bad? The good news is that I got it on sale for only $140. I would absolutely NOT recommend this as a smoker for heat controlled smoking like you need for briskets, ribs, chicken & turkeys. A Weber grill would be much better for charcoal grilling than this grill.

    Starter pit
This is a good starter pit. Had the exact same model before until it completely rusted out in less than two years. Got the same one again and I have learned not only how it cooks but also how to maintain it. I've had this now for three years and I am now able to cook anything I want on it. Once this smoker is done with I will move up to a smoker that is built with a thicker gauge metal or even to a custom-made pit, which means a way more expensive pit.( usually 10 to 15 times the price) So for someone starting out or trying to learn, this will be a good smoker for you to try out.

    Supposed to do this???
I bought this as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. He is in love with it!! My concern is the small smoker box. The first time he went to smoke, the paint on the small box peeled off. Some friends are saying its normal and supposed to do that, others are saying it is not supposed to peel. Insight? I hate the fact my boyfriend thinks he needs to repaint the small box with high resistant paint. He shouldn't have to do anything extra the first time he uses it. If it is supposed to peel, wont that make it rust faster? I'm scoring a 3 because he is in love with the smoker, but I am not in love with having to fix it after the first use.........if we are supposed to repaint.

Works well for this price point
3 stars for average. This is not my primary smoker...I bought it on internet special for $139 and it stays at my mother in law's house so I have don't have to load my 300 pound smoker in the truck every time we go there. The complaints on the peeling paint are valid. The finish coat on the fire box peeled up like poorly applied latex paint shortly after I lit the seasoning fire. I anticipated this and it is what it its. If I ever get around to it, I'll Scotchbrite the metal and repaint it with high temp paint. With that being said, I don't burn charcoal...I burn hardwood and it burns hotter. Assembly was straight forward and all the hardware was there. I used high temp RTV on all the seams just like I do with any other smoker...Walmart sells it in the automotive section and it's money well spent to help minimize leaks. All in all, this smoker is pretty much what I expected. The temp gauge is pretty much useless...but then again, most of them are because the probes tend to sit too high in the smoke chamber. It's made from thin gauge steel and is really not designed for heavy use. If you are prudent about tending the fire, you can get it to hold steady temp but don't expect to be able to walk away from it for more than a few minutes....it just doesn't have the thermal mass to retain heat. Long and short of it is this....if you have a reasonably good idea of how to smoke meat and don't have unrealistic expectations, you can produce great food with this. Just don't expect it to perform like a Horizon smoker....because it isn't one....it also doesn't cost 2 grand.

    Works good
I gave it 3 stars because of the offset box. We seasoned every inch of the smoker like paperwork stats. We used the smoker and the paint has all peeled off the sides and bottom of smoker and it's only 4 days old!! I sent them an email via there site but still haven't heard from anyone.

Easy assembly bumped it to 3 stars.
I just bought the American gourmet offset smoker 1280 on June 18th. Gave it to my husband on Father's day the 19th. Putting together was a breeze, thank you for that! However the paint on the firebox is almost completely flaked off, while we were seasoning the grill. Pictures are with in the first hour of seasoning. I understand that it is high temperature but would it be too difficult to put a high temperature paint on that side?! I realize that, eventually, the grill will experience wear and tear but for the first use is unacceptable. My husband and I have always bought char-broil grills, we have a gas char-broil grill as well. I would recommend putting a high temp paint on before use if you would like it to remain "new" looking for longer than a day. If not, grill is easy to assemble and cooked meat great. Ultimately, we will be looking into a different brand on our next purchase.

    Smoke
This grill is the bomb. It does what its suppose to do., smoke. The only thing i that i don't like is the temp gauge. I would rather have the degrees. Other than that i love it..

    Waiting on Charbroil
I bought 2 of these smokers in May ( 1 for myself and 1 for my son )and already the paint is coming off and is starting to rust! I know the warranty says it doesn't cover paint but this Shouldn't be happening after only a few uses! I have contacted Charbroil and will follow up with this review after I see what they want to do about it!
