Red walnut - beauty of a shelf!
The shelves arrived quickly and were in great condition. Solid wood (not particle board.) We did use one of the clamps to mount it to the wall but it's not as tippy as I expected. We have very "red" wood furniture and wood trim and I got the walnut shelf, nervous that it was going to be too brown. It's also very red and matches perfectly in our bedroom. It's about as tall as I am (5'7") and holds a lot more books than I expected - I even have an empty shelf and was able to put some framed pictures on the top. Really nice shelf.

I would not purchase this item again
Poor quality because of the thinness of the wood. Item (side) was broken upon arrival. Nice design though. Customer service was effective and helpful.

    Great value!
    I really like this shelf. It's solid wood as advertised. The assembly was not difficult, but I DID have to refer to the pics online to understand which way the shelf edge needed to face. Other than that, assembly was a cinch, and I did it all by myself. I put together two of these in roughly 30 minutes. I DID have to use a hammer to bang the little wood pegs in a bit, and when I did that SOME of the black paint came off of some of the pegs, so be careful about that. I happened to have a black wax pencil that is designed for furniture, so I used that to fill in the chipped areas. There was also an issue with one of the shelves not lining up in the very top and I could NOT get the screw in on one side no matter HOW HARD I tried. However, it didn't affect the overall look of the shelves, so I just tightened everything else down as best I could. There were a few flaws here and there, but I am still very satisfied with the overall quality for the price. I am currently using them in my home office and they add just the right amount of style and functionality.

    Excellent smaller bookcase.
    I ordered black because I wanted to paint it and have some of the black show. It turned out great. It is a good value. And a great bookcase.

    Cute Shelf, But Arrived Damaged.
    I do love this shelf, but mine arrived damaged. When contacting Hayneedle about fixing the problem- they could not offer me a replacement piece to complete my shelf, only to send it back for a refund. I decided to keep it as repacking this large shelf seemed like a lot of work. A tad disappointing, but still really like my shelf.

    Easy to assemble, looks great
    From what I can tell, this is a solid wood product. The shelves are made with a thick-cut, quality wood and finished with a real stain (not a veneer sticker). The shelves are rather easy to put together, but reading the instructions is highly recommended. I have not had any shelf bend or sway, even with 15 hard-back books (my entire Harry Potter set, and another 8 books). They look great in my living room with my dark-stained tv stand.
