Excellent for home sewing and baby quilts
Pros: Great machine at a good price. Easy to operate. Sews well on different thickness of materials. Fantastic for quilting baby quilts using the furnished quilting walking foot and extra extended tray. Lots of included useful accessories including DVD instructions and good manual. This machine replaced my 25+ years old machine and its amazing how soon I've become thrilled with this new Brother 130-Stitch SQ9185. Cons: Although 4 bobbins were included with the machine, I would encourage others who buy this machine online to also buy extra Brother SA156 bobbins at the same time, as the WalMart stores didn't carry those bobbins in stock. I would have liked a metal top spool holder instead of the plastic, but the style works smooth, and the top spool doesn't actually spin, like on older machines, just has a very smooth threading motion. Very satisfied customer.

Great sewing machine for quilting.
I ordered this sewing machine on line and picked it up in the store the same day. It arrived a day earlier than estimated and I was thrilled because I was able to take it with me to my quilting class that night. It has many great features with stitches and accessories. I love that it has a quilting foot and a walking foot. I also love the up/down needle feature and the automatic sewing feature where you don't have to use the foot pedal. I love the machine what can I say. :)

    A GREAT machine!
I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. I was FINALLY able to get a sewing machine this year and I am very pleased with my Brother 130-Stitch Sewing and Quilting Machine, SQ9185 thus far. I have several projects waiting for a machine, but since it was a long, long time ago when I last sewed on a machine, I started with a basic and made matching sci-fi themed bandannas for my family—great for camping! They were easy to sew a hem upon, so I took the next step and tried my hand at a reversible bib for a friend’s niece. I used the monogramming function to add the baby’s name to the bib’s tie. It worked well, but I will need to get a pair of sharper thread cutters to make the letters look crisp by closely trimming the extra thread between the letters. Pictured is this reversible bib, although after the picture was taken I did add a stitch about ¼ inch along the edge to tidy the bib up a tad. Since this bib, I have made some quilted bibs. After watching a video on how to attach the walking foot, it was fairly easy to attach this foot and sew along the quilted bib as needed. I have also made a blanket, 2 pillows, and a skirt. (Remember, I mentioned I had a lot of projects lined up!) The wide table was not only quick to attach, but very steady as well. It really helped when sewing the blanket. Pros: Easy to use. Easy to follow instructional DVD. Easy for a beginner but has plenty of functions and options for a beginner to move to master. Clear bobbin cover makes keeping an eye on the bottom thread a breeze. Quick needle threading with the needle threader. Walking foot makes very smooth stitches. The monogram function is easy to program and the letters come out nicely. The wide table is very sturdy. Cons: Fabric tends to pull to one side a bit, but I am still new to sewing machines. This very well may be operator error. All-in-all, so far, I would say this is a great sewing machine for the beginners and the experienced alike!

    Brother SQ9185-Holiday Contest
I am posting this review as my entry into the Walmart Holiday Sewing Contest. After reading many reviews and talking to some other Brother owners, I decided to give this machine a try. I was wanting a lighter-weight multi-functional machine to take to quilting retreat weekends. Reliability was important as well as good stitch quality for piecing and assembly of quilts. I have other very expensive machines so was hesitant that something in this price range would work well. I have been pleasantly surprised that this Brother has met the task and exceeded my expectations. I have shown it to two other friends who were also impressed and are planning to purchase also. I finished a recent holiday potholder exchange project and it sewed well with smooth stitches and no issues even when going over thick seams. I am very pleased with the machine and recommend it for anyone, but especially for those looking for a great travel machine.

    Awesome!!!
I bought this machine when the one I had finally gave up (Was also a brother!) I was worried that it would be too high tec for me... But, was so very easy to use... Everything from threading to filling the bobbins! I was in the middle of making a quilt when my old machine needed to be replaced, so, I threaded my new machine and finished it, now Ive been nonstop playing with all the features. I can't put into words how easy this machine is to use!! Attached is pic of my quilt I made for my husband who drives a truck its made from denim and flannel. Weighing 14 pounds! Can't wait to start another my next project!

The SQ9185 is an a gem and very affordable
I am posting the review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. My sister first purchased the SQ9185 as a portable machine to use in her 5th wheel camper. A group of us get together to sew once a week and several of us used it at one time or another. I never took the machine I had (another brand) as it was stored in a cabinet and not easily removed. When I used her machine a couple of the features made I knew it was time for me to have one of my own. I use the 1/4 inch foot for my quilt top seam, have used the walking foot not just for quilting, but also for some slicker, harder to manage fabrics to control slipping. The SQ9185 has a nice variety of stitches. The only problem I have ever had is if the bobbin thread picks up and slips to the right, when that happens it looks like a tension problem, cause it is! So I know to take a couple of stitches and look thru the clear bobbin cover to make sure the bobbin thread is staying in place. The SQ9185 has been one of my best choices for my everyday sewing room needs. Wish I had bought one a long time ago! My hubby even helped out by viewing the video and showing me how to use the needle threader! I recently re-purposed a wedding gown of my co-worker into a robe and slip for her daughters wedding, and a dressing gown for her grand-daughter too. Used the SQ9185 for the project and it worked like a dream (photo attached).

    Beginner quilter finds success
I just finished a lovely quilt as you go table runner. I made it myself using the Brother SQ9185 sewing machine. I really liked this machine, as this was my first quilting project and I could adjust the sewing speed. It was also handy to have the needle down capability. These features made it less frustrating than a regular sewing machine. I am now anxious to try another project knowing I can do it with this wonderful machine.

    Passed my test
I purchased this machine while working on a quilt. It was quilt as you go and in some places there were 15 layers of fabric to sew. This machine passed with flying colors. I used almost every feature. Yes the feed dogs appear they are not coming back up after free motion quilting but they do. The tension is controlled by sliding the thread between two metal plates on the far right before bringing it down to the front of machine. I replaced the needle a few times but it wasn't the machines fault. The semi auto threader works great. I own another brother but felt it was cheaper to purchase this one than have it serviced. Even the quilt shop owners can't find a reliable dealer to service their machines. I was already familiar with an auto threader and understood what the machine was trying to do. This version is better than the complete auto. I have been sewing/quilting for 36 years. This machine is willing if you are.

Great Machine even for a beginner
I recently purchased the Brother SQ9185 Sewing and Quilting machine. I am a true beginner meaning I have never used a sewing machine in my 50+ yrs of life. My very 1st project was a patchwork baby quilt (I probably should have started with something smaller and easier). After 5 days my project is complete and I am both pleased and humbled by it's finished look! I am very pleased with this machine. The user manual is very easy to follow and extremely helpful for a beginner. My craving for learning to sew, the 130 stitch and quilting availability and the reasonable price led me to purchase this machine. I'm looking forward to sewing and quilting many more projects. Just a few quirks but I attribute them to the user and not the machine. My Lil' Brother is surely becoming my best friend!
