Very good
I am very pleased with this product--you can use it anywhere ground beef is called for. I made a mexican lasagna using just this product--didn't mix with real beef--and it was delicious. No leftovers! I love how it doesn't take up any space in my freezer, and the price cannot be beat. This will become one of my new stapels.

You really MUST try this product!
This was a repeat order for me. I had been unable to find it in my local store. Now my local store carries it. This is the most economical and best tasting beef replacement product I have found. I highly recommend you give it a try! My first recipe was my famous meatloaf. I made it with this and another batch with regular beef for comparison since I have family members that eat both. The meat eating group said the texture and taste was very similar. I took it to a church potluck where nearly everyone is vegetarian and I had several people ask what "veggie meat" I used and would I share my recipe with the church.

    Very Salty
I have no idea why it is so salty, but perhaps it must be that way. My only suggestion other than also making cans half this size, would be to cut way back on the salt. I add a small portion of this in water and add a few pinches of the Augason Farms can green and red sweet peppers. After all the water has boiled away, I pour in a jar of spaghetti sauce. It really does make do well in spaghetti sauce. I have made barbecue sandwiches with it......I portion the amount to beef broth and after it is mostly finished cooking, I add chopped onion, pepper, and a tad of hot sauce. Finally I mix in plenty of Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce. I place on toasted hamburger buns and top with a bit more of the barbecue sauce. The consistency is like a sloppy joe so we use a fork to eat it instead of trying to pick up the bun. The pepper and sauce helps cut down the salty taste. I ordered two cans and I will be ordering more. It's very handy to say the least but it really is way too salty.

    Almost speechless it's so good
I bought this to have on hand to cut fat and calories to extend my ground beef when I use it. I read a review where they used it in spaghetti sauce and said they couldn't tell but the texture is softer but very close, the smell from the time you open the can is of cooked beef and I can't say enough good things about the taste, price and convenience. There's a recipe for BBQ sandwiches where you reconstitute 3/4C with 1C beef bullion then add 1C BBQ sauce. I figured try that because there's no hiding the product and it tasted really good it just has a slightly softer texture than ground beef. A double batch was 1 and 1/2 cup of this uncooked to 2 cups bullion and it cooked up to about 2 pounds of beef basically. One can of this even if used half and half to extend beef will go a long way and save money. It's so good I'm brave enough to try the chicken next lol.

This is my second can - as a meat extender
Mix it half and half with hamburger. I am not happy with most hamburger - seems to be a lot of gristle, fat and other unidentified stuff in those packages that you can't see through. I know what I am getting with this product and less fat too. Makes most excellent meat balls even hamburgers.

    Great value when used correctly
Will this replace 10$/lb steak? – no Will this reduce the amount of ground meat you consume, saving money and reducing animal fat intake? – yes Will anyone notice? – probably not as long as you don't totally replace the meat with TVP. I recently purchased both the Augason Farms Emergency Food Beef & Chicken so will be post the same review for both as the only difference is the flavor and color. While the word “Emergency” is in the product name, this appears to be standard TVP [textured vegetable protein]. I purchased this not for emergency food (which can be a good idea) but rather to both save money with hamburger reaching $3.50/lb, and to cut down on the amount of animal fat I consume. This appears to be a good quality product, and can replace one-half or more of the animal products with little or no change in the flavor or texture. If you make meatloaf the chicken TVP does a good job of replacing the veal in the mix. The beef TVP does a good job of replacing up to about ½ of the ground beef used in chili or tacos, and most people won't notice a difference. Will be trying chicken salad next, and possibly tuna salad. The main problem I had was finding the proper way to reconstitute, and how (much) meat to replace in my usual recipes. The web has plenty of information [Google on TVP for > 8MM hits] but most of this is vegan with total meat replacement, as was the TVP cookbook I got from Amazon. My suggestions are for Wal-Mart to include information on how to reconstitute, how [much] to substitute for meat in existing recipes, some example recipes, and to include this as a standard store item now that meat is getting so expensive.

    WOW!!
You betcha I was skeptical, but have given up meat so when I saw this I thought ok so I loose $11 bucks or hit the jackpot. Well folk's I hit the Jackpot! Love this product, have used it twice now and it really does cook up like it was beef. I add bouillon to it to give it more flavor but I will say that when you open the can the aroma of beef is very prevalent. I followed directions the first time, 1 part "Beef" to 2 parts water, but found it to be a bit on the wet, soupy side - like you cooked ground beef in water. You may want to play around with the amount of water or stock you use but after cooking it it really did seem like ground beef. I have since used it in chili and WOW does it work great! I will be purchasing other items from Augason Farms now that I know they have a quality product. Can't wait to try the "Taco" and "Bacon" flavors :)

    Pleasantly surprised
Had tried the chicken and wanted to try the beef. Was very pleasantly surprised, it was good straight out of the can. Crunchy tasty nuggets. Cooks up well, but these are nuggets, they are small. Don't expect steak. Very good as a quick fix meal, Protein, or long term storage.
