1. What types of mattresses are there?

When buying a mattress, it’s important to know what type of mattress you’re looking for. In the next section, we’ll guide you through finding the right mattress based on your sleep preferences. Here, we’ll give you a brief description of each type of mattress and their notable qualities.

Latex mattresses:

Latex mattresses are eco-friendly, naturally cool, and comfortable. They conform to the general form of your body but spring back once you've moved. They’re also very durable. A couple of things to keep in mind: latex mattresses tend to be a bit pricier than others and because they are so bouncy, can sometimes disturb your partner if you tend to move around. Memory foam mattresses:

Memory foam mattresses conform completely to your body. Because of this, memory foam relieves most of the pressure you might feel between your body and the mattress. This helps you with circulation and can decrease pain in your hips, shoulders, and other pressure points. Best of all, this soft material is plush and comfortable.Things to keep in mind: Some people don’t like the feeling of “sinking” into their beds and memory foam can be too warm for some sleepers. Gel mattresses:

If you’re hesitant about feeling overheated with a memory foam mattress, there are a couple of solutions. First, check out our “hot sleeper solutions” experience. Also, consider a gel mattress. These mattresses have a liquid gel that diffuses heat within the foam. This way, you're getting a sleep surface that's naturally cool and also provides support and pressure relief. Innerspring mattresses:

Innerspring mattresses are a common type of mattress. They feature a foundation (often made from wool), a central core (where springs and coils are located), and a top portion that is upholstered for comfort.

The coiled springs offer air circulation within your mattress which can have a cooling effect. Some innerspring mattresses feature individually encased coils. These are innerspring mattresses that have coils wrapped in titanium or steel. This allows the mattress to conform to the body better.

Things to keep in mind: The thicker the coils in your mattress, the more support it will give. If your partner moves around a lot while they sleep, you may feel the movement more than you would with a memory foam mattress. Shop innerspring mattresses >

Hybrid mattresses:

Hybrid mattresses combine springs with memory foam. This allows sleepers to have the support of the springs while enjoying the pressure relief that comes with the contouring quality of memory foam. Hybrid mattresses can feature traditional memory foam, latex, and even gel memory foam. Shop hybrid mattresses >
